Safety First” Tips For Water Fun

There’s hardly a better way to beat the heat than spending a day at the beach, lake, water park, or swimming pool. Amidst the laughter and splashes, however, it’s crucial to remember one thing: “Safety First” Water fun is a staple of summer, but it’s also an environment where accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. The good news is that most of these accidents can be prevented by following simple water safety guidelines. As pioneers in swimming instruction and water safety, the nation’s YMCAs have been teaching children and adults how to swim and stay safe in and around water for over a century.

In celebration of this milestone, we’re sharing the YMCA’s top “Safety First” tips for water fun:

1. Adult Supervision is Non-Negotiable

Whether it’s at the beach or the backyard pool, children should always be supervised by an adult. It only takes a moment for a fun day to turn into a tragedy.

2. Never Swim Alone

This rule isn’t just for kids. Even the most experienced swimmers can get into trouble, so always have a buddy with you.

3. Be Prepared for Emergencies

Knowing lifesaving techniques, first aid, and CPR can make a difference in an emergency. It’s a skill set that everyone, especially those frequently around water, should have.

4. Keep Essential Items Close

A stocked first aid kit, phone, emergency numbers, and sunscreen should always be within reach whenever you’re around water.

5. Follow Posted Rules

Rules are there for a reason. Make sure to follow all posted rules in any water environment to ensure everyone’s safety.

6. Secure Your Backyard Pool

If you have a backyard pool, it should have posted rules, a ring buoy, and a security fence with self-closing gates and childproof locks.

7. Secure Above-Ground Pools

For above-ground pools, secure and lock the steps or remove them completely when not in use.

8. Be Aware of Water Conditions

Before diving, be aware of the water depth, incline, and any underwater obstructions. Never dive in water less than nine feet deep.

9. Use Approved Life Jackets

Children should use Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Avoid inflatable toys as they can give a false sense of confidence.

10. Learn to Swim and Basic Water Safety Skills

Everyone should learn swimming and basic water safety skills. The YMCA offers swimming classes for all ages and levels. Remember, when it comes to water fun, “Safety First” should always be your motto. By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable water experience for everyone.
